Yankees Continue Losing Ways

Tuesday, June 23, 2009.  Despite a very decent outing by  Chien-Ming Wang (five innings, three runs, four strikeouts) the New York Yankees were shutout by the Atlanta Braves 4-0.  The Yankees left nine runners on in the first five innings.  Final box score: Yankees 0 runs, 4 hits, 1 error; Braves 4 runs, 7 hits, 1 error.  Next game:  Wednesday, June 23rd, 7:00 PM, New York @ Atlanta.

Hughes’ Sharp, Yankees Roll

May 25, 2009.  The New York Yankees had their way with the Texas Rangers this afternoon winning 11-1.  Phil Hughes was very sharp, going eight full  innings of shutout ball, giving up only three hits while striking out six and walking only one.  The only inning where he ran into ‘trouble’ was the second; Texas had two runners on but Hughes worked out of it without giving up a run.  Alex Rodriguez showed signs of coming into full form, going five for five (threee singles, two doubles,four rbi,2 runs scored).  Every Yankee starter had at least one hit.  Final box score: Yankees 11runs, 19 hits, 0 errors;  Rangers 1 run, 4 hits, 0 errors.  Next game: Tuesday, May 26th, 2:05 PM, New York at Texas.

Yankees Fall Short

The New York Yankees lost their series with the Philadelphia Phillies, dropping the third game 4-3 in eleven innings.  CC Sabathia went eight very strong innings, giving up just two runs and striking out four.  The Yankees tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on Melky Cabrera’s bottom of the ninth single.  In the tenth, the Yankees had two runners on but failed to score. After the Phillies took the lead in the top of the eleventh, the Yankees could not muster another comeback.  Final box score: Phillies 4 runs, 11 hits, 1 error;  Yankees 3 runs,  13 hits, 0 errors.  Next game: Monday, May 25th, 2:05 PM,  New York at Texas.

Phillies End Yankees Win Streak

Friday, May 22, 2009.  In the first game of inter league play this year, the Philadelphia Phillies out homered the New York Yankees tonight 4-3 and handily won the game 7-3.   A.J. Burnett started for the Yankees and gave up a homerun on his first pitch of the game.  The Phillies never looked back from there.   A.J. went 6 innings, giving up 5 runs.  Then Chien-Ming Wong, apparently the Yankees newest reliever, pitched the last three innings giving up two runs.  Wong was better than he has been earlier this year, but still has a way to go.  Final box score: Phillies 7 runs, 14 hits, 1 error;  Yankees 3 runs, 8 hits, 0 errors.  Next game:   Saturday, May 23rd, 4:10 PM, Philadelphia at New York.

Yankees Avoid Sweep, Defeat Reds

Andy Pettitte won his fifth straight as the NY Yankees defeated the Cinncinatti Reds this afternoon 4-1. The win allowed the Yankees to maintain their record of never being swept at home in inter league play. Pettitte went 6 strong innings and Mariano Rivera recorded his 21st save.

Yankees Sweep Padres

The NY Yankees beat the San Diego Padres today by a 2-1 score. Joba Chamberlain went 5 2/3 innings striking out nine and giving up one run. The bullpen finished the job allowing no runs. See this story for more on this game.

Yankees Lose Two to the Mets

The NY Yankeees lost 2 to the NY Mets 7-4 and 11-2. Alex Rodriguez teturns to the lineup tonight and the Yankees try to get back on track tonight against the Baltimore Orioles.
