Yankees Lose Season Opener in new Ballpark
April 16th, 2009. The New York Yankees were blown away today by the Cleveland Indians 10-2. This was the Yankees season opener and the official ‘unveiling’ of their new stadium. The pre-game ceromonies were very nice with Yogi Berra throwing out the first ball. Johnny Damon got the first hit in the new Yankee Stadium in the first inning. But by the fourth inning, the Yankees had already stranded eight runners. In the fifth, Jorge Posada got the first homerun which at the time tied the game 1-1. CC Sabathia struggled some but went 5 2/3 yeilding only one run. But in the seventh, the Yankee bullpen failed miserably, giving up a whopping nine runs, including a grand slam. The Yankees used sixth pitchers in all. The Yankees got one run back, but then Cleveland got another. The final forgettable score, 10-2. Nick Swisher hit another double today; he now has a nine game hitting streak going. Fianl box score: Indians 10 runs, 13 hits, 1 error; Yankees 2 runs, 9 hits, 1 error. Next game-Yankees v. Indians, Friday, Apr 17th, 1:05 PM in NY.
