Yankees Move into First

Friday, May 29, 2009.  The New York Yankees moved into sole poscession of first place tonight by defeating the Cleveland Indians 3-1.  The Yankees socred a couple of runs early off of Cliff Lee, giving Andy Pettitte a little breathing room.  Andy went five innings before being removed in the sixth with a stiff back.   Alfredo Aceves came in with two on, allowing only one run to score. Alfredo pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth, Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth, picking up another save.   Final box score:  Yankees  3 runs, 10 hits, 0 errors;  Indians  1 run, 8 hits, 0 errors.  Next game: Saturday, May 30th, 1:05,  PM  New York at Cleveland.

Yankees Take Series from Rangers

May 27, 2009.  The New York Yankees won their series with the Texas Rangers taking two out of three.  Mark Teixeira got the Yankees started in the first connecting for a two run shot.  Hideki Matsui joined in the fun hitting two back to back solo homeruns.  And Robbie Cano added another solo shot in the ninth. The Yankees knocked out fifty one hits in their three game series with Rangers.  A.J. Burnett started for the Yamkees and was dominate allowing no runs in six innings. Chien-Ming Wang pitched a scoreless  eighth and ninth inning, striking out two, looking much like the Chien-Ming Wang of old.  Final box score: Yankees  9 runs, 15 hits, 0 errors;  Rangers 2 runs,  5 hits, 1 error.   The Yankees have Thursday, May 28th off.  Next game:  Friday May 29th, 7:05 PM, New York at Cleveland.

Hughes’ Sharp, Yankees Roll

May 25, 2009.  The New York Yankees had their way with the Texas Rangers this afternoon winning 11-1.  Phil Hughes was very sharp, going eight full  innings of shutout ball, giving up only three hits while striking out six and walking only one.  The only inning where he ran into ‘trouble’ was the second; Texas had two runners on but Hughes worked out of it without giving up a run.  Alex Rodriguez showed signs of coming into full form, going five for five (threee singles, two doubles,four rbi,2 runs scored).  Every Yankee starter had at least one hit.  Final box score: Yankees 11runs, 19 hits, 0 errors;  Rangers 1 run, 4 hits, 0 errors.  Next game: Tuesday, May 26th, 2:05 PM, New York at Texas.

Yankees Fall Short

The New York Yankees lost their series with the Philadelphia Phillies, dropping the third game 4-3 in eleven innings.  CC Sabathia went eight very strong innings, giving up just two runs and striking out four.  The Yankees tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on Melky Cabrera’s bottom of the ninth single.  In the tenth, the Yankees had two runners on but failed to score. After the Phillies took the lead in the top of the eleventh, the Yankees could not muster another comeback.  Final box score: Phillies 4 runs, 11 hits, 1 error;  Yankees 3 runs,  13 hits, 0 errors.  Next game: Monday, May 25th, 2:05 PM,  New York at Texas.

Friday, May 22, 2009.  In the first game of inter league play this year, the Philadelphia Phillies out homered the New York Yankees tonight 4-3 and handily won the game 7-3.   A.J. Burnett started for the Yankees and gave up a homerun on his first pitch of the game.  The Phillies never looked back from there.   A.J. went 6 innings, giving up 5 runs.  Then Chien-Ming Wong, apparently the Yankees newest reliever, pitched the last three innings giving up two runs.  Wong was better than he has been earlier this year, but still has a way to go.  Final box score: Phillies 7 runs, 14 hits, 1 error;  Yankees 3 runs, 8 hits, 0 errors.  Next game:   Saturday, May 23rd, 4:10 PM, Philadelphia at New York.

Yankees Win Again

Tuesday, May 19, 2009.  The red hot New York Yankees continued their winning ways, trouncing the Baltimore Orioles tonight 9-1.  CC Sabathia went seven strong innings, allowing only one run, three hits while striking out seven.  Alex Rodriguez hit a two run homerun in the first to put the Yankees in the lead.  Mark Teixeira hit his fourth homerun in four games in the seventh, a two run blast.  The Yankees have won seven straight and are five games over .500.  Final box score:  Orioles 1 run, 3 hits, 2 errors;  Yankees 9 runs, 7 hits, o errors.  Next game:  Wednesday, May 20th,  Baltimore at New York  7:05 PM.

Yankees Extend Win Streak to Six

Monday, May 11, 2009.   The New york Yankees completed their sweep of the Minnesota Twins tonight, winning the fourth and final game of the series 7-6.  Andy Pettitte went a gritty 6 2/3rds innings, giving up four runs and gaining his fourth win.  Phil Coke came in in the eighth inning and finished the game getting his first major league save. Switch hitter  Mark Teixeira hit two homers, one from each side of the plate.  Alex Rodriguez also  hit a homerun in the first.  Final box score: Twins 6 runs, 13 hits, 1 error; Yankees 7 runs, 13 hits, 0 errors.  Next game: Tueday, May 12th, Baltimore at New York, 7:05 PM.

Yankees Drop One to Jays

Tuesday, May 12, 2009.  The New York Yankees lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1 in Toronto.  A.J. Burnett pitched a good game but nowhere near as good as Roy Halladay’s who pitched a complete game giving up only one run, walking no one and striking out five.  Final box score: Yankees 1run,  5 hits, 1 error;  Blue Jays 5 runs, 8 hits, 0 errors.  Next game: Wednesday, May 13th, 7:07 PM, New York at Toronto.

Yankees Come from Behind to Win

Sunday, May 10,2009.  The New York Yankees came from behind today to defeat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3.  Joba Chamberlain got in trouble early again, giving up a three run homer in the first inning to make the score 3-1.  But Johnny Damon hit a three run homer in the seventh inning and the Yankees went ahead 5-3.  Phil Coke pitched two scoreless innings and mariano Rivera pitched the ninth to earn his sixth save of the season.  Tomorrow is an off day and then the Yankees start a three game series with the Blue Jays before returning home.  Final box score: Yankees 5 runs, 11 hits, 0 errors;  Orioles 3 runs, 10 hits, 0 errors.  Next game: Tuesday, May 12th, 7:07 PM Yankees at Toronto.

Sat.,May 9, 2009. The New York Yankees one game win streak ended as the Baltimore Orioles beat up on the Yankees and Phil Hughes 12-5.  Hughes was ineffective again, this time giving up eight runs before being pulled in the second inning, going only 1 2/3 innings. It was an ugly game for Yankee fans and hard to watch.
