Yankees End Skid, Clobber Tigers

April 28, 2009.  The The New York Yankees ended their four game slide tonight by beating up on the Detroit Tigers 11-0. Phil Hughes, just callled up from the Yankees Scranton AAA team, went six strong innings, giving up only two hits, no runs, and pitching himself out a bases loaded jam.  The game was scoreless until the seventh when the Yankees scored ten runs, topped off by Jose Molina’s grand slam.  Final box score: Yannkees 11 runs, 12 hits, 0 errors; Tigers 0 runs, 4 hits, 1 error.  Next game: Yankees v. Yankees Topple A’s

Tues.,Apr.21,2009.  The New York Yankees, led by Any Pettitte’s strong pitching performance, topped the Oakland A’s today 5-3.  Pettitte went seven innings, giving up nine hits and two runs. The Yankees scored four runs in the fourth inning and Johnny Damon added a fifth with a solo homerun in the sixth.  Mariano came in to pitch the ninth and recorded another save.  The final box score: A’s 3 runs, 12 hits, 1 error; Yankees 5 runs, 12 hits, 0 errors.  Next game: Wed, Apr 22nd, 1:05 PM v. Oakland in Yankee Stadium.

Yankees Rebound, Spilt Series with Indians

Sat.,Apr.19th, 2009.  The New York Yankees recovered from yesterdays 22-4 thrashing by the Cleveland Indians and won today 7-3.  A.J. Burnett started but was not at his best, walking seven and throwing three wild pitches. Jorge Posada’s seventh inning pinch hit homerun was the hot topic of the day, and it took an eight minute review by the umpires to confirm it was in fact a homerun. Final box score: Indians 3 runs, 4 hits, 0 errors; Yankees 7 runs, 9 hits, 0 errors.  Next game Apr. 20th, 7:05 PM, Oakland at New York.

Yankee Homers Beat Indians

Friday, April 17, 2009.  The New York Yankees hit five solo homeruns on their way to beat the Clevland Indians 6-5.  It was the Yankees first win in their new stadium.  Joba Chamberlain started the game for the Yankees and was not very effective, lasting only 4 2/3 innings while giving up 5 runs, 6 hits, walked 5 and 1 homerun.  However, this time the bullpen held the game in check while the Yankees rallied.  The game was tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth with two out when Derek Jeter came up and hit the game winning homerun. Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth and made it exciting by allowing two hits but with two outs, stuck out the fianl batter for his third save in as many chances this season.  Final box score: Indians 5 runs, 9 hits, 1 error; Yankees 6 runs, 8 hits, 0 errors.  Next game: Saturday, April 18th, Yankees v. Yankees Lose Season Opener in new Ballpark

April 16th, 2009.  The New York Yankees were blown away today by the Cleveland Indians 10-2.  This was the Yankees season opener and the official ‘unveiling’ of their new stadium. The pre-game ceromonies were very nice with Yogi Berra throwing out the first ball.  Johnny Damon got the first hit in the new Yankee Stadium in the first inning.  But by the fourth inning, the Yankees had already stranded eight runners. In the fifth, Jorge Posada got the first homerun which at the time tied the game 1-1.  CC Sabathia struggled some but went 5 2/3 yeilding only one run.  But in the seventh, the Yankee bullpen failed miserably, giving up a whopping nine runs, including a grand slam. The Yankees used sixth pitchers in all.  The Yankees got one run back, but then Cleveland got another.  The final forgettable score, 10-2.  Nick Swisher hit another double today; he now has a nine game hitting streak going.  Fianl box score: Indians 10 runs, 13 hits, 1 error; Yankees 2 runs, 9 hits, 1 error.  Next game-Yankees v. Yankees Recover and Win over Rays

Tues., April 14th.  The New York Yankees recovered from last nights 15-5 thrashing by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and won tonight 7-2 behind the lights out pitching of A.J. Burnett.  The Yankees, who desperately needed a good pitching performance tonight, got more tha they could have wished for with A.J.  He pitched no hit ball through the sixth, gave up 3 hits and two runs in the seventh (the Rays tied the game at 2-2), and then pitched a scoreless eighth.  Burnett walked one and struck out nine for the night.  The Yankees had gotten a run back in the the eighth and were ahead 3-2. In the top of the ninth, Brett Gardner’s double got the Yankees an insurnace, but then Jeter iced the game with a three run homer, his second of the year.  Nick Swisher, last nights pitching ‘hero’ for the Yankees (yes, Nick Swisher pitched last nights eighth inning with one strikeout) conributed tonight with a solo homerun (his fourth) and a double. Brian Bruney pitched the ninth, striking out the side. The box score: Yankees 7 runs, 11 hits, 0 errors; Rays 2 runs, 3 hits, 0 errors.  Next game: Yankees v. Rays, Thursday the 15th at 4:08 PM in Florida.

Forget the Sweep, Yanks Lose to Royals

Sunday, Apr 12th.  Despite a promising start and a solid performance from starter Joba Chamberlain, the New York Yankees lost to the Kansas City Royals 6-4.  The Yankees took an early lead in the first.  Gardner singled, stole second base, moved to third on a fielders choice and scored standing up on a wild pitch. His speed will really help out the Yankees this season.  Jobo gave up a solo homerun in the third and the score was tied 1-1.  An error in the fourth by Nick Swisher helped the Royals score a couple of runs making it 3-1.  In the sixth, the Yankees scored 3 runs to make it 4-3.  Brian Bruney replaced Joba to start the seventh (Joba had given up only 1 earned run).  Bruney retired the Royals in order.  With two outs in the eighth,  Phil Cope came in for the Yanks.  With a runner already on base, Cope gave up a few hits and just like that the Royals were leading 6-4.  The Yankees went down in order in the ninth and that was the game.  Final box score: Yankees 4 runs, 6 hits, 1 error;  Royals 6 runs, 7 hits, 1 error.  Next Yankee game is Monday, Apr 13th, v. Tampa Bay (Rays home opener) at 7:08 PM.

Yankees Beat KC

Sat. April 11th.  The New York Yankeees took the second of three games against the Kansas City Royals, 6-1. CC Sabathia went 7 2/3 innings, getting his first win as a New York Yankee. He stuck out six, walked none and gave up no runs. The Yankees scored all six of their runs in the first five innings. KC didn’t score a run until the ninth.  Final Box Score: Yankees 6 runs, 9 hits, 1 error; KC 1 run, 7 hits, 0 errors. The Yankees go for the sweep against KC on Sunday, Apr 12th. at 2:00 PM.

Yankees Defeat Royals

April 10th, 2008.  The New York Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals in a day game 4-1. Andy Pettitte, making his first start of the season, was outstanding, going seven innings while yielding just one run and three hits.  Jorge Posada hit a two run double in the first giving the Yankees an early lead. They nver looked back. In the fourth, Nick Swisher drove in one run with a double and Derek Jeter added the fourth run on a fielders choice. Brian Bruney pitched a scoreless eighth as did Mariano Riveria in the ninth, earning his first save of the season.  Final Box Score: Yankees 4 runs, 7 hits, 0 errors;  Royals 1 run, 4 hits, 0 errors.  Next game: Saturday, Yankees vs. Royals at Kansas City, 7:10 PM.

Yankee Bats Come Alive, Trounce Baltimore

The New York Yankee bats were hot this afternoon as the Bronx Bombers dominated the Baltimore Orioles this afternoon 11-2.  A.J. Burnett had a strong outing, going 5 1/3 innings, giving up 2 runs, 7 hits, 1 walk while striking out 6. The Yankee bullpen was terrific again, ( Phil Coke, Jose Veras, Brian Bruney and Mariano Rivera) giving up no runs and no hits for the second day in a row.   Mariano pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with 1 strike out.  Mark Teixeira got his season going with a homerun to lead off the fourth, at that time tying the game. Robinson Cano walked and Nick Swisher followed with a 2 run homer. The Yankees added 4 more runs in the sixth, 2 more in the seventh on Cano’s two run homer, and another 2 runs in the ninth. Nick Swisher’s double in the ninth with two outs gave him five rbi for the day. The final box score: NYY 11 runs, 13 hits, 0 errors; Balt. 2 runs, 7 hits, 1 error.
