Bernie Williams, the New York Yankees beloved center fielder for many years, has been working out with the New York Yankees in spring training. He admits to still having the passion and desire to play the game. Bernie will be playing in the the World Baseball Classic for Puerto Rico. Will Bernie try to make a comeback to the majors. CC Sabathia missed a day of throwing batting practice due to the effects of the flu. However, the next day he seemed fine after throwing 40 pitches. Derek Jeter has a sore hamsting and has skipped running exercises. jeter will be playing in the World Baseball Classic for the United States next week. See this story for more.

Here’s one take on the New York Yankees outlook for 2009. They added three top free agents to an already strong team. And one thing I agree with, the Yankees will win this season!

Mariano Riveia is returning to the New York Yankees after an excellent season last year that ended with shoulder surgery. Mariano, who has two seasons left on his contact, is startint the spring season slow. So far his arm feels fine and no problems are expected. Managaer Joe Girardi is expecting Mariano to be the Yankees closer for at least a few more seasons. See this story.

The NY Yankees signed one more pitcher yesterday, Brett Tomko, to a minor league contract. Tomko is a right hander who pitched last year for the Kansas City Royals and the San Diego Padres, without much success. Tomko has been in the majors for twelve seasons and has a lifetime 4.68 era. Heading into the 2009 season, the New York Yankees bullpen looks to be in great sharp. Mariano, Ramirez, and Burney look to be in top shape and should be outstanding. This three will be the core of the bullpen with many others also ready to perform. For more, see this story.

The NY Yankees traded minor leaguer pitcher Chase Wright to the Milwaukee Brewers for Eric Fryer who plays catcher and outfield positions. According to Brian Cashman, the Yankees have an excess of pitching talent in the minors and are looking to aquire position players. For more information, see this article.

The NY Yankees signed Brian Bruney to a one year deal worth an estimated 1.25 million dollars. Bruney, who spent much of last year injured and unable to play, but finished strong in the fall. Since the Yankees signed Xavier Nady and Melky Cabrera already this year, there are no other players on the roster eligable for arbitration. For more details, see this article.
